James Chilton-is our families Mayflower ancestor. James, a tailor by trade, was the oldest of all the Mayflower passengers, and one of the first to die after reaching the new world. He was born and raised in Canterbury, Kent, England, and around 1600 moved to Sandwich, Kent. By July 1615, James, his wife, and at least a few of his children were living around Leyden, Holland. He came on the Mayflower with his wife and daughter Mary. James and his wife died the first winter upon reaching the new world, leaving their daughter orphaned. Mary Chilton as popular legend has it, was the first female to step ashore at Plymouth. James father was Lyonell Chilton. The name of James wife is currently unknown at this time. Popular belief was that his wife was Susanna Furners......based upon more current research, that has been dispelled due to disovery of Susanna's baptism record, she was too young. |
